Organic vs Commercial Foods; Worth the Cost?… My Rant

If your car could perform 40 times better than what it currently does, would you pay double the price for that car? That is how much more nutrient dense Organic food is vs. Commercially raised foods. 40 times.  Organic food is what God meant for us to eat.  We survived on what he has created for us here on earth, not processed garbage created by man.  We are designed to eat whole foods that are nutrient dense.  

Next time you go to the grocery store, pick up a bag of Doritos, or whatever your favorite junk food is and see how many ingredients you can read, let alone pronounce.  Those things you cannot pronounce are all the stabilizers, emulsifiers, additives, perservatives, carcinogenic aids, food colorings, ETC, that are added to those foods; and you are eating these things because they taste good!  We put our bodies through a detoxification nightmare trying to metabolize all these synthetic “drugs” for lack of a better word.  By the way, the definition of a drug is “a substance that has a physiological effect when ingested”.  I’m pretty sure processed foods fit the criteria.  All these things being added to these “foods” are used to increase shelf life, add color, flavor, and sugar so that you’ll not only be visually attracted to the food, but also the taste.  What the FDA does not tell you on the ingredient label is all the chemical additives being left out on the ingredient list because they are on the FDA’s gras list (generally regarded as safe).

Take for example a strawberry milkshake at a typical fast food restaurant.  The following things are not listed by the FDA because they are GRAS: Amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethol, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, butyric acid, dipropyl ketone, hepatanoate, ethyl lactate, SOLVENT, y-undecalactone, ETC ETC ETC, the list goes on. 

Still looking to save a few dollars? If you need more convincing lets talk about commercially raised foods and how chemically drowned they are in fungicides, herbicides, pesticides, rodenticides, ETC.  Most, if not all commercially raised animals, are given feed that consist of grains (wheat and corn).  Cows, sheep, buffalo, are designed to eat grass, not grain.  An interesting finding, if I have not scared you enough already, is what the FDA possibly may allow within corporate feed lots.  Listen to this… “Some commercial meat producers have begun research trials adding cardboard, newspaper, and sawdust to reduce costs.  FDA officials say that its not uncommon for some feedlot operators to mix industrial sewage and oils into feed to REDUCE costs and fatten the animals more quickly” (Chek 1).  

Still looking for those sales at Albertsons, Ralphs, or Vons?  Always choose quality over quantity, your body just may thank you for it.  In the quest for a healthier and better performing body, lets give it the fuel it needs to leave the competition in the dust. 

Two general rules of thumb when it comes to food:

1) If you cant read whats on the ingredient label DON’T put in your mouth!

2) If it wasn’t here 5,000 years ago, it’s probably detracting from your health, not adding to it.

    Matt,

    Great post…organic food is undoubtedly worth the extra cost. But does there have to be an extra cost? Maybe it depends on where you shop.

    Okay, you told us what stores to steer clear of (Albertsons, Ralphs, Vons), but what stores would you recommend? How do Henry’s, Whole Foods, and Jimbo’s measure up?

    Food for thought: To give your post some meaty substance, consider relating your topic to House Resolution 875, or the Monsanto controversy. That would take this article to 212 degrees! (10 in, 10 out)

    Hey Matt,

    First of all, love the article – there really isn’t anything on earth better for the body than organics. However, while organics are definitely more nutritious and healthy than commercial foods, it is my understanding that the nutrient difference between locally grown foods and organic foods is minimal and relative to freshness more than anything. I’m all for getting rid of processed and even fortified products the way Australia does so people have no choice but to consume healthier food, and I love the go-green mission behind organics, but this can be expensive in the short term (even though diseases like cancer and diabetes from processed food products are more expensive in the long run).

    So after all that yapping, my point is that eating simple, fresh foods – locally grown fruit and veggies, unfortified grainy bread, AA eggs, even unprocessed brown sugar – is just as healthy of an option as organics the majority of the time. Marion Nestle’s What to Eat has a great section on this topic and I think you’d really enjoy the read!
